Yufuin is a spa town at an hour’s train from Beppu, further back into the mountains. This is a charming and discreet onsen city. Actually, this is the only interest of the city and you must go there to bathe, which means book in a spa. What we did not.
What remains to do in Yufuin if you have not booked in an onsen for a private bath with your hubby? A stroll around the lake, which is obviously a place of choice for wedding photos. Autumn painted some marks on trees, but nothing really conclusive. The street to reach the lake is a shopping mall in the open, which both offer you the Hello Kitty plush as bowls from the local crafts. In short, everything, much of anything but nice things, if only one takes the trouble to look. You can try a cream specialty (apparently, there are cows up there), but honestly, their specialty “financier” is much too oily for my taste.
The day was a little strange, under a dark sky. I do not know what we expected going in Yufuin, but we did not find it. Finally, I found a shop Totoro and usually that’s enough to make me happy. I’m not too difficult.
There is also a very special thing in Beppu, it is the smell. If we do not necessarily perceive when we are in, but when we come back, it is quite striking: Beppu feels the past egg. And yes, the smell of all that water – or rather all that steam – probably with a little sulfur, not perfum of roses. It is light, but it is there.
Tomorrow we leave Kyushu island to go on another island: back to Miyajima. Could you all make an invocation to the God for the Fall? We would like the maples to be red… Thank you for your support and participation.
